Painting fun with my Mama...

Mom braved the snow to come help paint today. Here she is working on the craftroom:

She was a huge help! She put the second coat on the accent wall. Got the ceiling done in the kids' bathroom. Got the rest of the craftroom white done (almost) just waiting for accent wall to dry so I can do those corners.  We also went around and did all the touch-up on the main walls.

And she brought Meconi's because she loves me. :-)  I love my Mom!  Thank you!!!

Tile choices

Went tile shopping today. I didn't realize how satisfying it would be to find the perfect tile! I was jonesin' for a cigarette afterwards!

We can't use real hardwood over the radiant floor and I'm worried about using laminate in high-traffic areas. (I had originally planned on hardwood in the entry way, dining room, kitchen and nook.) As much as I'd like to say the dog won't be allowed in the real house, I know he will so I wanted something durable that still has the warm look of wood. Lo and behold, I wasn't the first person to have such a need! I found this beautiful wood-look tile!!

Yep. It's really tile. And it goes beautifully with the wall color. One more decision checked off the list!

Now for the laundry and bathrooms...
I really like this for the laundry room:
It's 20x20 so will have fewer grout lines.

And for the master bath, I am torn between these two:

The first one I already have from the shop flooring and they are 18x18.  The pebbles are going to be the shower floor.

The second one is 12x24 and is only $1.49/sf.

Decisions, decisions...

You know you have a problem when...

You walk into the paint store, are greeted on a first name basis AND he knows what you color need another quart of before you ask.  Thank you, Tyler, for making the paint choices a little less scary for me!

Dining room paint

The tray ceiling in the dining room... This was Tom's idea and it was a good one! So I thought it would be a good idea to paint it a lighter shade of the main wall color.
Kinda thinking I should have gone another couple shades lighter now... Not sure there's enough contrast to have made the extra masking worthwhile. :)

Here's a panoramic view of the craftroom wall:

Painting, painting, painting

Neither Tom nor I like heights. Especially not scaffolding 18 feet in the air having to mask and paint a ceiling that is 24' at the peak. That's just one reason I have the best husband in the world!
And a big shout out to Tom's brother and his wife for coming over on Sunday (despite their own kitchen remodel) to put the top 6' of scaffolding up. I so appreciate it!

And since we had the paint sprayer all set up, might as well shoot the dining, laundry & hall ceilings as well as the hall closet. A productive night, indeed! Time for bed...

That's more like it!

Potentially Purple just wasn't doing it for me so Tyler, the very helpful guy at Sherwin Williams talked me into Exclusive Plum. I was a bit dubious as it's much darker than I thought I wanted. But it's just a quart to try and I can always paint over it so I gave it a try...
I love it! Need to pick up another quart to finish and give a light second coat.

Accent wall???

So I don't know if Potentially Purple is living up to it's name... Kinda reminds me of a girl's nursery. Going to go try another color...

More painting...

Got a few hours of painting in today before starting my other job of taxi driver and walking ATM.

This is the girls' loft area:
All done and ready for electrical trim.

I picked up a quart of color for an accent wall in the craftroom. Stay tuned!

Saturday night

Ok, so I'm a little out-of-order. Forgive me. :)

While Amanda was at the basketball game, I started painting the upstairs hallway until I ran out of paint.
And Pete was helping:

They're here!

Why yes! Yes, I do have beautiful chandeliers!
And no. No, I couldn't wait until the ceiling was done to unpack one.

Amanda's room - Final

So the colors in the last pictures don't seem to be accurate. It's bright and beautiful!

Amanda's room!

Amanda and I got up this morning and got a great start on her room until she had to get cleaned up to play with the school band at a basketball game this afternoon. It was really nice to have one-on-one time with each girl painting their rooms.
While polka dots are the theme of both rooms, Amanda had a completely different take.
We started with a blue wall...
The first strokes of the roller:
In case there was any question who's room this is:
And the princess on her throne:
And let the polka dotting begin:

The opposite walls are a gorgeous green:
For the record, it's not really THIS bright:
Tomorrow morning Amanda will finish it up. Stay tuned for the final pics!

Painting by the not-so-pro

While I really try to focus on the positive about this build, there are always going to be negatives that will come up. <begin rant> As I look at all the beige overspray on the ceilings of the entire downstairs and the high ceilings of the living room and foyer, I can't help but get irritated anew at myself for getting talked into doing the walls before the ceiling. Now it will take at least  2 coats of white to not get shadowing from the beige not to mention the inevitable drips onto the walls. Our pro painter friends and everything we read said to do ceilings first. It makes sense. But we let the guy who is supposed to be helping with the high stuff do it his way. Oh, and I have no idea when he'll be back again so I guess I get to do the tedious masking now.<end of rant>
